Dr. Afshar's Background
While my credential are important and listed below for your information, I think you should know the type of person you are entrusting your most cherished possessions. Like you, I live in New Hampshire with my wife and three children. In addition to my intense passion for the science and practice of psychology, I am an artist. I have taught psychology since 1986 and currently teach at the New Hampshire Institute of Art. I also have extensive experience in the field of Educational Disabilities and College Admissions and served for several years as Director of Special Education and Guidance in several school districts.
I have a passion for children's welfare. I find children of all ages fascinating and their world-view very enlightening. I will admit that I have not lost my own sense of childhood as yet, and hope I never do.
I have worked professionally with children and adolescents since 1980 and spent much of my adult life learning about child development and psychology. Beyond that, however, I believe psychology is a science whose principles can be applied to solve many types of human dilemmas.
Professionally, I am a licensed clinical mental health counselor in New Hampshire. I hold a Doctorate degree in Psychology and a Masters degree in counseling psychology. I am trained in many subspecialties including biofeedback, neurofeedback, clinical hypnotherapy and Neurolinguistic Programming.
I have served on the Executive Board of the New Hampshire Psychological Association including as its president in 2010-2011 and now serve as its past-president. I have provided expert opinion and testimony on several contemporary issues affecting children both in the courts and in public and professional media.
I tend to approach my life and work with humor but that does not mean I don't take your concerns very seriously. And finally, while I maintain appropriate professional boundaries, I approach my relationship with my patients with tremendous warmth and compassion.
